Lefcoe 2017: Great Class, Great Year!

While the Lefcoe Leadership Class of 2017’s time together has officially come to a close, its best qualities will live on for years to come: friendships will endure, mutual efforts will be shared, the Lefcoe Alumni Association will take on new, energetic members and, last but not least, the kids who play baseball and football at the Churchland Little League facility will enjoy improved facilities and a significantly upgraded concession stand. Since the income from concession sales produces a huge chunk of the Leagues’ annual income, this is a very big deal. Parents and volunteers who staff the concession stand

Lefcoe Fund-raiser Set for February 27

All too often, boys arrive at the Tidewater Youth Services Foundation's Westhaven Boys' Home with only the clothes on their backs. To address this, and to complement the support and treatment rendered by TYS, the Lefcoe Leadership class of 2016 is purchasing individual backpacks, each stuffed with clothing and personal items for each of the home's young residents. Additionally, the '16 class is scheduling several mentoring sessions, plus an event or two that'll be just plain fun. To fund this project, the class is hosting a fund-raising event at Roger Brown's in Olde Towne on Saturday, February 27, from 7

Lefcoe Grad Loves City, Grows Business and Jobs

Tracy Link, 2015 Lefcoe Leadership grad, is a "giver." And the traits that attracted her to the Portsmouth Partnership's Lefcoe class, which fosters leadership and civic involvement, continue to propel the upward trajectory of her growing business. Her mission? Actually, she has several: grow a Portsmouth business, create jobs, and give back to the community (she serves on the boards of Safety Town and Starbase). She attacks each with the commitment and passion implied by the name of her company: Integrity Security Services.  Read more here . . .

LEFCOE ALUM FORMS NEW FOUNDATION TO COMBAT RECIDIVISM

2015 Lefcoe Leadership alumna Dr. Jaclyn Walker quotes Socrates as she describes the philosophy of her new creation, the M.A.N. (Men Alleviating Negativity) "All Citizens deserve a Second Chance" Foundation.  "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but building the new," she says.  Accordingly, her organization provides services such as resume writing, classes on professional etiquette, and training on how to become readjusted to society after incarceration to convicted felons who want to work toward another chance at life. Great Year for the Lefcoe Class of 2015

The 29-member Lefcoe Leadership Class of 2015 graduated on Wednesday, April 1.  Tied with the class of 2014 as the second-largest class in the program's history, many friendships were formed as guest speakers led the group through discussions of Portsmouth's history, its schools, volunteer culture, and more. Despite the challenges brought by frequent snow and ice, this energetic group chose to attack two hands-on projects: the refurbishment of the buildings and grounds of Safety Town, and the landscaping of the Portsmouth Colored Community Library Museum. A new addition to the class offering this year was a specially-hosted tour of STARBASE,
